The Detroit Lions finally caught a break in their ongoing injury saga. What initially seemed like a season-ending blow for David Montgomery has turned into an unexpected ray of hope.
The running back, who injured his knee during Sunday’s thrilling 48-42 shootout against the Buffalo Bills, received encouraging news after seeking multiple medical opinions this week.
NFL Insider Ian Rapoport shared the promising update on Thursday, reporting that Montgomery spent several days consulting with medical experts.
Sources close to the situation are now optimistic that the star running back has dodged the need for season-ending surgery.
“The Detroit Lions’ injury drama rolls on, but this time there’s a bit of good news. After getting hurt in Sunday’s 48-42 loss to the Buffalo Bills, initial tests on David Montgomery’s knee suggested his season was done. But after consulting a few more doctors this week, Montgomery found out he won’t need MCL surgery. So, this is a big win for him and the Lions.” Rapoport wrote.

The turning point came when Montgomery sought a third medical opinion, which supported the rehabilitation approach for his MCL injury rather than immediate surgery.
This development marks a significant shift from Lions head coach Dan Campbell’s Monday announcement, where surgery seemed inevitable.
The new treatment path offers Montgomery a chance to heal naturally over the next few weeks, keeping the door open for a playoff comeback.
The timing couldn’t be better for Detroit, who currently hold the top spot in the NFC but face intense competition.
They’re locked in a three-way tie with the Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings, making every remaining game crucial.
The Lions’ schedule doesn’t offer much breathing room either, with challenging matchups ahead against the Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers, and Vikings.
One misstep could cost them both their home-field advantage and the NFC North crown.
